MM2H Visa Overview
Malaysia My Second Home Program.
The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme is a long-term residence visa for foreigners who want to live in Malaysia. In most cases, this visa does not allow employment. However, the Platinum MM2H visa in West Malaysia includes the right to work as one of its benefits.
Unlike retirement visas in other Asian countries, MM2H is not limited to retirees. In fact, the minimum age requirement is lower. As a result, the programme is popular with Singaporeans, professionals, investors, and families who are looking for a long-term stay option near Singapore.
West Malaysia MM2H
Visa Categories.
West Malaysia offers three MM2H visa tiers. Each tier requires a higher fixed deposit. In return, applicants receive a longer visa duration and more benefits.
- The Silver and Gold MM2H visas offer long-term residence with different validity periods.
- The Platinum MM2H visa, on the other hand, is valid for 20 years. In addition, it allows holders to work in Malaysia.
Therefore, applicants can choose a visa tier based on their financial ability and lifestyle needs.
East Malaysia MM2H
Visa Categories.
In East Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak manage their own MM2H programmes. These visas are separate from West Malaysia. Generally, the requirements are less strict. However, applicants must live in the state that issues the visa.
In Sabah, approved applicants are required to purchase a property. This requirement is part of the visa conditions. In Sarawak, applicants aged 50 and above can apply without buying property. Meanwhile, younger applicants may still qualify if they choose to purchase a property.
Because of this flexibility, East Malaysia MM2H is attractive to people who prefer a lower cost of living and a quieter lifestyle.
MM2H – SEZ.
Special Economic Zone
Malaysia also offers a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) MM2H visa, currently limited to Forest City in Johor. Applicants must purchase a residential unit within the development.
Forest City is located near the Second Link between Johor and Singapore, making it particularly appealing to Singapore residents who want a more affordable living option while maintaining easy access to Singapore. For those who do not commute daily, crossing the border outside peak hours can offer significant lifestyle and cost advantages.
